La Cave Du Septime
3 rue Basfroi, 75011
There is definitely no shortage of outstanding food, wine and architecture in the 11th arrondissement of Paris. Erupting from the historical heart of the Bastille rises a wealth of well-renowned restaurants and wine bars alongside the iconic Septime. We sat down for some bottles in the attractively archaic former shoe shop, Septime ‘La Cave’.
An early evening crowd of young professionals, tourists and locals all pack inside this charmingly compact space amongst bottle cabinets, jazz beats and the warm tones of handcrafted woodwork. A very little sister to the larger restaurant located just across the street, Septime La Cave is a priority for any future Paris trips.
Patrick Bouju, Môl
As expected, we found a generous selection of natural wines with all the producers you would hope for and more. We opted first for Mol by Patrick Bouju. His amazing Auvergne wines were first introduced by a close friend a few years ago and due to limited availability, it had been a while since I had the opportunity to partake once more in this full, fruit-forward gem from one of the best. A fresh and fun blend of red grapes, including Merlot, Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Muscat, Gamay. An incredibly satisfying wine and exceptional counterpart to the ‘Pâté en Croûte’ alongside other cold plates Septime La Cave had to offer.
I heard that some of the grapes in ‘Mol’ are sourced from Antony Tortul (La Sorga) who’s mastery I was soon to discover through the unmissable bottle we chose next.
Antony Tortul, La Sorga, Fier Hérétique 2017
Founded in 2008, Antony Tortul’s La Sorga wines are highly recognised and through my deep appreciation for an awe-inspiring label, I snatched at the opportunity to try this wild wine from the Béziers, Languedoc winemaker.
With a fragrant collaboration of Muscats, Nielluciu, Cardinal, Listan and a few more, this profound blend is the most exciting wine I have discovered so far this year. The orange-pink colour is striking, intriguing and indicative of the notes you can expect with full complexity, blood orange and summer fruit. Just as we were informed by bar staff, the wine is very much alive and one to be enjoyed quickly, whilst it changes glass to glass.
