Pet-Nat & Pizza in Prenzlauer Berg

Part One

With a diverse melting pot of creatives, it is no surprise that Berlin conveys its distinct willingness to embrace passionate expression, through its food scene. Getting lost in the city over a weekend we found shelter in natural wine bars and food markets whilst seeking warmth from Gut Oggau fuelled pizza ovens. Here are a few we plan to revisit after lockdown.

Markethallen Neun

Large historic market hall with a contemporary feel just on the edge of Kreuzberg. A widely diverse range of cheese, wine, bakeries, florists and butchers.

Drunk by Nature

This natural wine stall was only a few days old when we arrived and housed a great selection from well known European natural winemakers to smaller Hungarian and German producers. By the bottle or glass, you can drink away whilst exploring the rest of the markets.

Kumpel und Keule

Favoured by the Kreuzberg locals this butcher stall serves a small but highly recommended menu of burgers. Served in a simple fresh crusted roll with the traditional approach to garnish, the quality of the meat is left to do all the talking.

Rocket Wine

Located close to central Berlin on the edge of Mitte this small natural wine bar has a true independent feel with a small, warm inviting space and friendly hound. Here you will find very well-priced magnums of Staffelter Hof alongside a great selection of orange, rosé and Pet-Nat wines.

The featured wine is Mademoiselle by Jean Christophe Jézéquel. Pet Nat from the Loire Valley. Fresh, sharp, tart apple acidity with plenty of strawberry notes, perfect for sitting out front watching the bikes go by.

Standard Pizza

Standard Serious Pizza sits on a vibrant corner on the edge of Prenzlauer Berg. Inside, you can expect a lively conversational atmosphere set within a considered minimalist setting, clean lines, steel, light wood and concrete decor.

Napoli style sourdough made with flour from the Campania region and Fior di Latte sourced from Agerola. A tasteful selection served amongst bottles of Gut Oggau and Christian Tschida from an extensive wine menu.

With the door swinging and every table taken it is clear that standard serious pizza is neighbourhood staple.
